I’m proud to be an auditor. And I am very proud to be an auditor working in the public sector. It is a rewarding career, filled with a great variety of clients and trusted relationships built across many years.

Being an auditor is a fulfilling profession; one that needs an inquiring mind, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. It is perfect for those of us who like to understand how something works and how good decisions are made. For public sector auditors, we are the necessary friend to help maintain trust and confidence in government. We provide messages, information, and advice that improve governance, decision-making, and accountability.

A career as an auditor is diverse, and it's that diversity that has kept me here for so long. We work with many clients, in many industries and across all of Queensland. We never know what challenge will be next, which makes it exciting to come to work each day. We also have long relationships with our clients, meaning we can see the impact of our work over a long period of time.

QAO is 164 years old and has a great sense of purpose. We feel like the work we do matters. We play an important role in maintaining the public’s confidence in the system of government, which affects all of our lives.

As Queensland’s Auditor-General, I’m acutely aware of the responsibility that accompanies the work that we do. I also know that this is a fundamental driver that is never far from the minds of my professional and hard-working team.

Celebrating our profession on Auditor Proud Day

On this year’s Auditor Proud Day, the commitments we all share are worthy of reflection and celebration. I’m proud to acknowledge the contributions of every member of my team, including the firms with which we work, and I appreciate the professionalism and passion they bring every day. As I look ahead to the future, I’m conscious of the changes and challenges faced by both our clients and our workforce. I have tremendous confidence in the skills, knowledge, and talent of my Queensland Audit Office team to prepare for the future and to deliver.

Auditor Proud Day is our collective opportunity to reflect on the career path we have all chosen. From its origins 10 years ago as an initiative by the Centre for Audit Quality in the United States, Auditor Proud Day has been embraced worldwide, providing audit professionals with a platform to promote the value their work adds to economies, sustainability, public service delivery, and more.

September 27 also marks the 164th anniversary of the Queensland Auditor-General, making this week a double celebration for our collective team.

Show your pride on 26 September

There’s never been a more important time to be part of the auditing profession.

It’s an exciting and challenging time to be an auditor, and our profession is worth celebrating. So, no matter what you are doing on 26 September, I encourage you to take some time to reflect on the work you do, be proud of your profession, and share your story with others.
